Vectrex Mini interview - David Oghia talks up the nostalgic vector powerhouse

Having been wowed by the news of the Vectrex Mini at Gamescom , I rushed off some questions to VectrexOn's main man  David Oghia . After a post-event, well earned, break, he's kindly given us a lot of detail about the project and some new images of the unit to share.  His story mirrors mine somewhat, Vectrex represents a glowing, unaffordable, obelisk of gaming power from our youth! But he's had the energy and drive to do something about it, and met the right people to get the job done!  What first got you interested in Vectrex and what spawned the idea of a Mini version? I’ve always been passionate about retro-gaming, but my first love was computers rather than consoles — the ZX81, then the Commodore 128. I only really discovered the console world in the late 90s, which is when I got my very first Vectrex. Of course, I had seen it in stores back in 1983, but at that time it was far too expensive for me.  Today, I own five Vectrex systems at home. Vector-based games ...

Alpha mini-arcade units move the bar for Evercade

Four years and a million sales into the Evercade adventure, and producer Blaze continues to push the brand. Their recent news barrage started with the upcoming lower-cost "-R" models, arriving in July, and the beefier Giga cartridges to support larger PlayStation-and-beyond games (starting with the Tomb Raider Trilogy).

Now they move the goalposts a few steps further with the arrival of Alpha, hinted at on the recent new controller hardware. Before the launch, it was easy enough to figure out this is Evercade's big seasonal seller as there are two hardware gaps in the Evercade roadmap for November.

With the big reveal just gone live,  Evercade has teamed up with Capcom again for a Street Fighter and MegaMan pair of bar top mini-arcade versions. The Evercade Alpha features an 8” high-resolution IPS screen and USB-C power, stereo speakers, cart and controller connectors, and a headphone jack at the front of the unit.

It comes pre-built in the box, so no assembly is required, and it packs-in WiFi for any system updates. The unit stands at 410mm tall meaning it will fit in even the smallest households or game rooms.

I'm not classing these as an essential gaming purchase, but they should definitely be a Christmas hit for collectors and a great gift, although Evercade definitely needs to get some physical Capcom carts to fill in the gaps for those who didn't get the EXP and might miss out on these models.
