Vectrex Mini interview - David Oghia talks up the nostalgic vector powerhouse

Having been wowed by the news of the Vectrex Mini at Gamescom , I rushed off some questions to VectrexOn's main man  David Oghia . After a post-event, well earned, break, he's kindly given us a lot of detail about the project and some new images of the unit to share.  His story mirrors mine somewhat, Vectrex represents a glowing, unaffordable, obelisk of gaming power from our youth! But he's had the energy and drive to do something about it, and met the right people to get the job done!  What first got you interested in Vectrex and what spawned the idea of a Mini version? I’ve always been passionate about retro-gaming, but my first love was computers rather than consoles — the ZX81, then the Commodore 128. I only really discovered the console world in the late 90s, which is when I got my very first Vectrex. Of course, I had seen it in stores back in 1983, but at that time it was far too expensive for me.  Today, I own five Vectrex systems at home. Vector-based games ...

Updated lower-cost Evercade consoles arriving July

Hot on the heels of the new Giga Carts (and the unfortunate leak of the Tomb Raider Collection), Blaze has some new hardware to keep the Evercade ball rolling. Slightly cheaper and with a new charcoal and blue paint job, meet the EXP-R and VS-R.

A definite upgrade for me as my OG Evercade is temperamentally failing to recognise carts when I insert them, but it has been a fantastic couple of years with the little white portable that has done a lot to legitimise retro gaming.

Update: New Evercade hardware launches delayed until August! (And now the EXP-R has been delayed to November due to a production problem.)

Evercade VS-R and EXP-R

There are a few tweaks to the packages. There's no HDMI-out or built-in game collection with the EXP-R, instead it will ship with the first Giga collection, to be announced soon (the Duke Nukem art is just a place holder).

Both models are arriving in July with pre-orders up shortly. If you want the original white EXP with the Capcom collection, grab one before stocks vanish. Amazon has stock for now

Or you can get the Capcom games with the Super Pocket model, with Funstock still having some available. There's also the Taito version and I suspect more Super Pockets will be announced later this year. Remember they play all Evercade carts too, not only the built-in games, if you want the cheapest route into Evercade collecting.

Also on the way is a Evercade TATE Grip that will work with both the Evercade EXP and Evercade EXP-R. The Evercade TATE Grip will secure them in a comfortable controller-like cradle so we can play TATE games for longer with more accurate response and user comfort.

This will be available from Evercade retailers for £17.99, $19.99 and €19.99 from July. Prices for the Evercade EXP-R are now much lower at £99.99, $99.99 and €119.99 with the VS-R at £89.99, $99.99 and €109.99.
