Vectrex Mini interview - David Oghia talks up the nostalgic vector powerhouse

Having been wowed by the news of the Vectrex Mini at Gamescom , I rushed off some questions to VectrexOn's main man  David Oghia . After a post-event, well earned, break, he's kindly given us a lot of detail about the project and some new images of the unit to share.  His story mirrors mine somewhat, Vectrex represents a glowing, unaffordable, obelisk of gaming power from our youth! But he's had the energy and drive to do something about it, and met the right people to get the job done!  What first got you interested in Vectrex and what spawned the idea of a Mini version? I’ve always been passionate about retro-gaming, but my first love was computers rather than consoles — the ZX81, then the Commodore 128. I only really discovered the console world in the late 90s, which is when I got my very first Vectrex. Of course, I had seen it in stores back in 1983, but at that time it was far too expensive for me.  Today, I own five Vectrex systems at home. Vector-based games ...

Evercade announces Giga Carts for bigger collections

Evercade's recent road map reveal for 2024 was pretty much a blank slate, and with a slightly down-on-the-numbers look compared to previous years. One thing that will be bigger is the size of the games.  That's as the brand has figured out how to bring larger more-modern, disc-based, retro games our way, primarily from the PlayStation, and perhaps GameCube, PSP and/or Dreamcast formats.

Update: and the first one is officially confirmed as the Tomb Raider 1-3 collection from the 32-bit PlayStation.

The company release says “Giga Cart is a new type of cartridge we are making that is designed specifically for larger and more modern retro games, mostly originally released on CD. This new cartridge type will be identical in size and shape to your existing carts but will internally have a larger capacity to bring you these more demanding titles."

Two Giga Cart collections are promised for 2024, with presumably plenty more to come, now that it has the power to negotiate for larger titles.

To cope with the production cost increase, Giga Cart Evercade cartridges will have an RRP of £22.49/$24.99/€24.99. Buyers can identify a Giga Cart by the new logo, which presumably is compatible with all versions of the Evercade hardware.

Most of the more recent games have been among the smaller end of the PlayStation roster. Recent release 40 Winks on Piko Collection 3 was around a 330MB ISO file. But now there's plenty of reason to expect more multimedia-heavy titles as well as those from the larger end of the retro-cart-based machine library.
