Vectrex Mini interview - David Oghia talks up the nostalgic vector powerhouse

Having been wowed by the news of the Vectrex Mini at Gamescom , I rushed off some questions to VectrexOn's main man  David Oghia . After a post-event, well earned, break, he's kindly given us a lot of detail about the project and some new images of the unit to share.  His story mirrors mine somewhat, Vectrex represents a glowing, unaffordable, obelisk of gaming power from our youth! But he's had the energy and drive to do something about it, and met the right people to get the job done!  What first got you interested in Vectrex and what spawned the idea of a Mini version? I’ve always been passionate about retro-gaming, but my first love was computers rather than consoles — the ZX81, then the Commodore 128. I only really discovered the console world in the late 90s, which is when I got my very first Vectrex. Of course, I had seen it in stores back in 1983, but at that time it was far too expensive for me.  Today, I own five Vectrex systems at home. Vector-based games ...

All about Freedom Wars Remastered

So, Freedom Wars hit the stores, and fell, rather than flew off the shelves. It sold just over 13,000 physical copies across Switch (8,200) and PlayStation 5 (4,800) in Japan.

And in the west, where there's no physical release, a thousand-plus people are climbing the trophy rankings according to the various tracking sites. But that's what you get with next-to-no marketing from Namco.

On the social side, lots of Vita players are getting back into it, and welcoming the return of multiplayer, while storming toward the platinum thanks to their innate knowledge. I'll jump in come payday in a few weeks!

Original story: Freedom Wars is out now on Switch and PlayStation, and Namco has put together a (badly AI-voiced?) Systems Guide to the improvements and new features of the former Vita exclusive.

Update: And the Freedom Wars Remastered trophy listing is live, which if memory serves is pretty much like the PS Vita original. (And the US launch trailer is live at the bottom of this piece)

If you missed the earlier stories, Freedom Wars Remastered is out on the 10th January, with a raft of updates and refinements on the much-loved original.

It is priced $39.99 for Switch on the US eShop, or $50 for the Remastered Contribution Edition. No sign of it in the UK Nintendo store.

Update: Freedom Wars now live on PSN, £32.99 for the Standard and £39.99 for the Contribution Edition with a Boost Pack and Digital Art Book.

The PS5 physical edition is available from PlayAsia, £45 for the English version. Check out the official game Freedom Wars Remastered page here

Update: Note, Namco is reporting and apologising for crashes related to some voice selections (and possibly more problems).

Back to the video, alongside the improved visuals, framerates are tweaked combat, are a tougher Deadly Sinner mode, and a casual online battle mode for more focused, customisable, scraps between teams or friends. With plenty of more tweaks in the resources and character areas, check out the video for brief details.

Freedom Wars Remastered

If your first question is what's Freedom Wars? Take a peek at the updated intro movie, and my review of the original. But get ready for fast-paced multiplayer or allied bot combat against giant mechanoid beasts bent on kidnapping the valuable members of society that you sinners must rescue to slash years off your rather harsh sentence.

And here's the US Remastered launch trailer that just went live...
