Vectrex Mini interview - David Oghia talks up the nostalgic vector powerhouse

Having been wowed by the news of the Vectrex Mini at Gamescom , I rushed off some questions to VectrexOn's main man  David Oghia . After a post-event, well earned, break, he's kindly given us a lot of detail about the project and some new images of the unit to share.  His story mirrors mine somewhat, Vectrex represents a glowing, unaffordable, obelisk of gaming power from our youth! But he's had the energy and drive to do something about it, and met the right people to get the job done!  What first got you interested in Vectrex and what spawned the idea of a Mini version? I’ve always been passionate about retro-gaming, but my first love was computers rather than consoles — the ZX81, then the Commodore 128. I only really discovered the console world in the late 90s, which is when I got my very first Vectrex. Another Heist on the horizon for the Steamworld Crew

Swedish developers Steamworld Games delight with every release and the quirky, rusty bunch of space pirate robots in Steamworld Heist definitely deserve another adventure. Step forward Heist II with an aquatic feel and an August release date for Steam and consoles including PS4/5 and the Switch.

The tactical shooting combat of the first game is expanded with ship-to-ship battles on the high seas on as Captain Leeway and his ragtag crew uncover an enigmatic menace threatening the Great Sea. They wade into battle with new guns, tactics and a stylish range of hats.

The suitably shanty-themed music again comes from Steam Powered Giraffe, as you sail the seas and find cool gear to upgrade your crew for turn-based gunfights against huge bad guys.

The basic combat is similar with the need to judge ricochet shots to perfection and use the scenery and handy tools to trigger death and mayhem. Add in some real-time naval combat and we've got another classic Steambot adventure on the horizon!

If you're new to the Steamworld universe and games, do go and find Steamworld Build and Steamworld Dig II for some excellent adventures, and make sure you play on an OLED to get the best of their fantastic use of lighting and shade.
