Atari 50 Collection gets new game DLC

The Atari 50 Anniversary Collection (review) is one of my highlights of the year. It shows how to do the classics right, putting proper effort into making compilations beyond shovelling a bunch of games onto a disc.

Atari 50

Update: The new games include:

  • WWI air combat title Warbirds on the Lynx,
  • The impressive-looking prototype Aquaventure
  • Bowling, Miniature Golf and Super Football on the 2600
  • Maze Craze and Circus Atari
  • Adventure II and Return to Haunted House
  • 2600 rarity Save Mary
  • Multiplayer focused Double-Dunk and MotoRodeo

After an impressive feature update in the summer comes news of more games via an update next week from Atari and developer Digital Eclipse. Whether they will be for the early consoles or the more "recent" Lynx, Jaguar, or modern re-envisionings like VCTR-SCTR remains to be seen. Whatever - they will be a welcome delight.

If you want to guess, here's a clue from the announce tweet, suggesting sports, shooting and corn!

And with new hardware, a new console to play the original carts, it looks like Atari is finally managing its legacy properly, rather than flogging titles around for cheap cash-ins.

To lift from an earlier piece, "I would love to play the Lynx's Steel Talons and Desert Strike versions again, RoadBlasters is a must, while sorting out the Aliens vs Predator Jaguar license would mean access to a chunk of great gaming history. It goes without saying the Activision games (notably, River Raid, Pitfall and Ghostbusters) are a big black hole in this collection."

So here's hoping for some great news and an early Christmas present when the DLC hits on 5th December.
