While we wait for the new OLED model PlayStation Portal, the original is still delivering the goods for Sony. And while it might only be a streaming box, the company's networking wizards can still fettle and improve the gaming experience for players.
A new system software update for PS Portal is out, delivering higher visual fidelity. The feature list from the PlayStation blog post includes:
1080p High Quality mode
"Players can now select a 1080p High Quality mode during Remote Play and Cloud Streaming. This new mode enables players to enjoy games at a higher bitrate compared to the default 1080p Standard mode, providing a smooth and high-fidelity experience."
Users can enable the mode, by going to [Quick Menu] > [Max Resolution] and select [1080p High Quality] during Remote Play or Cloud Streaming.
There's also improved search, better trophy notifications and account creation for new owners.
The post from Takuro Fushimi, Senior Manager, Product Management, notes that cloud streaming monthly users grew by 162% year-over-year in January, and over 50% of PS Portal users are now PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers, reflecting growing engagement.
Nintendo Switch 2 v22 update
Nintendo has something of a more powerful update for its box of portable gaming tricks. Offering a handheld boost mode that allows compatible OG Switch games to run as if they are in TV Mode on the original hardware. Boosting the Switch title's game display from 720p to 1080p display in handheld mode.
A few games aren't benefitting due to layout/screen issues, but the likes of Fire Emblem Warriors, Sonic Forces and others are all basking in the new visual splendour.
Naturally, this update does chew through the battery more than other modes, but no worries if you're plugged in or using a hefty power bank.
Both 8-inch class devices can now play games better, depending on your network connection for the Portal and compatibility limitations for Switch titles, but matching sets of good news, whatever portable you play on.
All we need is both parties to drop new models with better screen technology to goose those sales numbers. The Portal will be three years old later this year, and Switch 2 is coming up to its first anniversary. Perfect times for new screens and features.
