Vectrex Mini interview - David Oghia talks up the nostalgic vector powerhouse

Having been wowed by the news of the Vectrex Mini at Gamescom , I rushed off some questions to VectrexOn's main man  David Oghia . After a post-event, well earned, break, he's kindly given us a lot of detail about the project and some new images of the unit to share.  His story mirrors mine somewhat, Vectrex represents a glowing, unaffordable, obelisk of gaming power from our youth! But he's had the energy and drive to do something about it, and met the right people to get the job done!  What first got you interested in Vectrex and what spawned the idea of a Mini version? I’ve always been passionate about retro-gaming, but my first love was computers rather than consoles — the ZX81, then the Commodore 128. I only really discovered the console world in the late 90s, which is when I got my very first Vectrex. Of course, I had seen it in stores back in 1983, but at that time it was far too expensive for me.  Today, I own five Vectrex systems at home. Vector-based games ...

Eternum Ex scratching that perfect retro itch

Just looking at the screenshots really makes me want to play Eternum Ex from Radin Games. My immediate thought was Bomb Jack, but with big monsters, and one of my all time favourites.

And Tehkan's opus is listed among the developer's (Radin Games, the chap behind Galacticon) inspirations, alongside Ghosts n' Goblins - which has to be on everyone's favourites list, right?

Update, yes Eternum EX previously hit digital stores some 5/6 years ago. This is celebrating the physical release and double pack with Galacticon, arriving at the end of September.

Then I watched the trailer and now I'm not so sure with the focus on insane difficulty. But I'm happy to give it a try. The Ex version is an major update to a 2015 original, now with support from Flynn's Arcade who seem to know a good retro title when they see one.

The plot focuses on a knight past his prime, Sir Arthur on the quest for eternal youth and more treasure. He sets off to the underground realms of Samarnath, spread over 25 levels with plenty of secrets and bonuses to uncover along the way.

Launching this month on Switch and PlayStation, there's always time for one more round of retro arcade fun. And as an older gaming knight, I'd be happy to tuck up early with this on a portable screen to relive the glory days.

I'm curious, what other games do you see as inspirations behind Eternum Ex? Comments open. Booty on the Spectrum now leaps to mind, but that might just be all the chests.
