Vectrex Mini interview - David Oghia talks up the nostalgic vector powerhouse

Having been wowed by the news of the Vectrex Mini at Gamescom , I rushed off some questions to VectrexOn's main man  David Oghia . After a post-event, well earned, break, he's kindly given us a lot of detail about the project and some new images of the unit to share.  His story mirrors mine somewhat, Vectrex represents a glowing, unaffordable, obelisk of gaming power from our youth! But he's had the energy and drive to do something about it, and met the right people to get the job done!  What first got you interested in Vectrex and what spawned the idea of a Mini version? I’ve always been passionate about retro-gaming, but my first love was computers rather than consoles — the ZX81, then the Commodore 128. I only really discovered the console world in the late 90s, which is when I got my very first Vectrex. Of course, I had seen it in stores back in 1983, but at that time it was far too expensive for me.  Today, I own five Vectrex systems at home. Vector-based games ...

Vectrex Mini vectoring in on launch via Kickstarter

Okay, Vectrex isn't exactly a portable system. But the new mini is definitely a more mobile and better bet for gamers than the few original models creaking around online auctions. The early-80s vector graphic gaming system with its own screen was a desirable, but short-lived machine, with just 28 games released.

Update: Please read the in-depth interview with the project founder, David Oghia, to find our more details and his love and ambition for the project.

Update: The Kickstarter will see 50 units at a founders price of around £86, a white limited edition models of just 200 units at £190 and the rest of us piling in for the standard model at £112.

Living off the hype of the Star Wars vector arcade game, it had a version of Pole Position, Scramble and many shooters. But then it vanished with a green/blue afterglow burned into my young retinas.

Vectrex Official is showing off the first Vectrex Mini hardware at Gamescom and it will delight me to put down cold hard cash for one whenever a launch is announced through Kickstarter or whatever means necessary. Early bird pricing will be around €149 (plus delivery), so expect a scramble before that ramps up to the full RRP.

Hopefully, it will support the many homebrew titles that came after the product's demise, and encourage a new generation of developers to create glowing-line-based gaming goodness for it. And if that isn't small enough for you check out the new pocket HyperMegaTech keychain arcade games!

Update: Some pics from Gamescom of the Vectrex Mini units in action, and the packaging... and that it packs an AMOLED screen to make those vectors pop, even if nothing can replace the original phosphors of the CRT.

Note, the unit can run off a powerbank via the USB-C connection for portable gaming, making it even more relevant to this blog! Not sure for how long, but sounds like a good little extra.
