PSP2, Switch 2 and Xbox... a brighter portable future? (Updated)

Feed the Deep cursing Steam Decks soon

Luke Muscat, designer of legendary mobile (and Vita) games Jetpack Joyride and Fruit Ninja has dated his first solo-dev effort for Steam gamers, Feed the Deep, arriving in a couple of weeks.

A gorgeous adventure from the depths, it brings the dread touch of HP Lovecraft to a submersible roguelike arcade game (Luke namechecks Spelunky among his inspirations, so no bad thing), with a console or mobile release hopefully down the line.

Feed the Deep sees a little diving buddy (I hope he has a name) on his quest for the riches from the sea bed and below, where he discovers the many eyes and tentacles of the Eldritch terrors lurking among the procedurally generated caves.

He can collect gems and other resources to upgrades and items, and keep the nasties from eating him, there's plenty to explore. With dark spaces to exploit, limited oxygen to overcome, and hostile wildlife, all with an eerie Cedar Jones soundtrack, as demonstrated in this neat tweet.

Teleporters make it easier to get around, as you glide around finding keys for chests, searching for the many hidden areas and secrets, while avoiding the ever-present risk of drowning in the gloom, something that should be compounded on a Steam Deck OLED screen adding to the glow of his flashlight and the bioluminescent creatures.

After the jollity of Dave the Diver on PS5, Feed the Deep should be a more brooding experience, but one with plenty of tentacled legs if Spelunky was anything to go by.

Currently playing on my Vita/PS4/PS5
