PSP2, Switch 2 and Xbox... a brighter portable future? (Updated)

New OLED Steam Deck comes to light

Sony were clearly doing it wrong all along. The Vita came with an OLED first and then bombed before reverting to an LCD screen of the later model. Both the Switch and now Steam Deck have shown that LCD then OLED is the way to go. Or we can look at this as demonstrating Sony can be brave if they try, and Nintendo and others struggling to catch up.

The new Steam Deck is landing the same time as the PlayStation Portal, with a November 16 release. With a meaty HDR OLED display, WiFi 6E for stronger streaming and online play, plus a better battery and some improved ergonomics and power management it smells luxury compared to most portable devices.

The screen size has crept up a little to 7.4 inches and adds a 90Hz refresh rate for smoother play, with a 1000 nit peak brightness to make it easier to use in brighter locations and outdoors. EuroGamer's Digital Foundry already has a review up for all the deep dive details!

Steam Deck OLED

All of this power (driven by an AMD Van Gogh 6nm chip set) and the cool display comes at some cost, with the Steam Deck 512GB OLED model costing $549 and an extra $100 for the 1TB model. The current LCD 256GB model is coming down to $399 as an entry level model - no word on UK prices. Not too bad given the original packed in 64GB of storage.

Even so, Steam Deck is a big niche with around a million units shipped (not necessarily sold) which makes the Vita look like a massive success!
