Vectrex Mini interview - David Oghia talks up the nostalgic vector powerhouse

Having been wowed by the news of the Vectrex Mini at Gamescom , I rushed off some questions to VectrexOn's main man  David Oghia . After a post-event, well earned, break, he's kindly given us a lot of detail about the project and some new images of the unit to share.  His story mirrors mine somewhat, Vectrex represents a glowing, unaffordable, obelisk of gaming power from our youth! But he's had the energy and drive to do something about it, and met the right people to get the job done!  What first got you interested in Vectrex and what spawned the idea of a Mini version? I’ve always been passionate about retro-gaming, but my first love was computers rather than consoles — the ZX81, then the Commodore 128. I only really discovered the console world in the late 90s, which is when I got my very first Vectrex. Of course, I had seen it in stores back in 1983, but at that time it was far too expensive for me.  Today, I own five Vectrex systems at home. Vector-based games ...

Evercade pockets another Bitmap Brothers collection

The Bitmap Brothers Collection 1 (Evercade console cartridge no. 22 for those keeping count) has one of my favourite games for Evercade in the form of Xenon 2, driven by the phenomenal Megablast soundtrack. But the overdose of Speedball games means it isn't one of the strongest cartridges. Rebellion own the Bitmap's IP, and its good to see it being put to decent use!

Improving things for autumn comes Bitmap Brothers Collection 2 (aka Computer Collection no. 8). We get a broader Amiga-powered collection with Cadaver, (plus the Cadaver: The Payoff expansion), Gods, Chaos Engine 2, Magic Pockets and the excellent real-time strategy title "Z" from the PlayStation for a hefty does of 16- and 32-bit class.

Arriving in September, Bitmap Bros 2 provides isometric, top-down, side-scrolling and 3D action, making it one of the most varied carts yet. And, since the Amiga iterations were generally the best of the bunch, these are the finest versions available.

The Bitmap Brothers 2 cart hits pre-order at the end of August and should be on-sale by the end of September. With that and the Team 17 Amiga cart, I think we're pretty much there on the best of British developed 16-bit talent.
