July Update: PlayStation 6 and PlayStation Portable future visions

The recent PlayStation video about the "simulated" technology in development, discussed between AMD and Sony engineers that will power the PlayStation 6 was interesting from a geek point of view. But from a gameplay perspective, there is - IMO - no need for a PlayStation 6 for another few years. Especially with the limp Xbox is-it-isn't-it launch .  July 2026 Update : Sony managed a cannon-fire sized self-inflicted injury by announcing the end of physical releases across the end of the PS5 era and the launch of the PS6. Due to lack of sales (only 7 titles have passed the 100,000 mark in the last year) and economics, it still doesn't matter to PlayStation owners, collectors are stores, who can now only sell digital codes in a box.  June 2026 Update : The latest snippet of gossip for Sony's next-gen systems is a modular/external drive that will connect to both devices. Caligula Effect 2 virtualises/vocaloids on PS5 in October

The Vita's Caligula Effect from Furyu and Atlus was a curious game, a Persona-lite that left no lasting impression on me from its 2017 western release, back when there were plenty of other JRPGs to enjoy. That hasn't stopped NIS America bringing the sequel our way, for PS5-only in October, after a PS4/Switch release a few years back.

It looks, again, like you have to build relationships with the brats of Tatefushi Academy (why always a darn school!), joining members of the Go-Home Club to escape the strange reality of Redo, fighting annoyingly over-complex battles in a weird VR system. There is a physical release for the US, but everyone else will have to manage with a digital download, assuming the price isn't too mad.

More interesting is Furyu's Crystar (out on Switch), which will hopefully join the queue for a PS5 release. If there is any appeal in Caligula 2, it will be in the story from Persona authors Tadashi Satomi and Takuya Yamanaka, but the rest, including the vocaloid soundtrack will likely just add to the grindy irksome nature of the Caligula Effect world, rather than evolving on the original in a better way.

With so many quirky Japanese games lingering like Mary Skelter, Side Kicks, Black Wolves Saga or Gnosia, which at least got a mid-priced western Switch digital release, here's hoping NISA and others stretch a little further into the visual novel and JRPG archives.
