Vectrex Mini interview - David Oghia talks up the nostalgic vector powerhouse

Having been wowed by the news of the Vectrex Mini at Gamescom , I rushed off some questions to VectrexOn's main man  David Oghia . After a post-event, well earned, break, he's kindly given us a lot of detail about the project and some new images of the unit to share.  His story mirrors mine somewhat, Vectrex represents a glowing, unaffordable, obelisk of gaming power from our youth! But he's had the energy and drive to do something about it, and met the right people to get the job done!  What first got you interested in Vectrex and what spawned the idea of a Mini version? I’ve always been passionate about retro-gaming, but my first love was computers rather than consoles — the ZX81, then the Commodore 128. I only really discovered the console world in the late 90s, which is when I got my very first Vectrex. Of course, I had seen it in stores back in 1983, but at that time it was far too expensive for me.  Today, I own five Vectrex systems at home. Vector-based games ...

Tropical Zone homebrew trailer brings FPS action to the Vita

With the official Vita games release schedule down to a trickle, its time to start focusing on the homebrew scene bringing legitimate indies to those who have jailbroken their handhelds. That number seems to be booming as the Vita, like the PSP before it, becomes the must-have retro and emulator machine of its time - honorable mention to the Evercade of course.

Starting us off down this exciting new slope is indie dev VitaHex with a first person shooter, Tropical Zone. Set on an island in a sparkling sea, there's vehicles to use, lots of height to the game, plenty of weapons to fire off and bad guys to shoot, all at a smooth-looking framerate.

For an early glimpse of a solo developer hard at work, it looks rather impressive. Stick in some missions, secrets and an "out there" Horror Channel or SyFy plot, and we have a game to play.

If you want to support VitaHex's efforts, jump over on Patreon to keep the good stuff rolling, and check out the Weebly page for many other apps and games. If there's some decent gameplay there, I'd say Tropical Zone should be worthy of a PSN release if a publisher is keen to get involved.
