Vectrex Mini interview - David Oghia talks up the nostalgic vector powerhouse

Having been wowed by the news of the Vectrex Mini at Gamescom , I rushed off some questions to VectrexOn's main man  David Oghia . After a post-event, well earned, break, he's kindly given us a lot of detail about the project and some new images of the unit to share.  His story mirrors mine somewhat, Vectrex represents a glowing, unaffordable, obelisk of gaming power from our youth! But he's had the energy and drive to do something about it, and met the right people to get the job done!  What first got you interested in Vectrex and what spawned the idea of a Mini version? I’ve always been passionate about retro-gaming, but my first love was computers rather than consoles — the ZX81, then the Commodore 128. I only really discovered the console world in the late 90s, which is when I got my very first Vectrex. Of course, I had seen it in stores back in 1983, but at that time it was far too expensive for me.  Today, I own five Vectrex systems at home. Vector-based games ...

No UMD transfer scheme for western gamers

Perhaps Sony has forgotten the however many million PSP consoles and games it sold in the west over the years, that'd be quite easy given the slow strangulation of the handheld over here. But even so, leaving all those loyal users in the lurch (while Japanese gamers can happily play on) when it comes to old UMDs is, frankly, taking the piss a bit.

I've got lots of recent games via PSN, but my first three years of PSP titles all came on UMD along with plenty of later ones. My PSP still works, but for how long? What am I supposed to do when it finally dies, those PSP E1000s might only be £85, but that's still a lot of money. This is where Sony can be rightly crucified for its obsession with proprietary formats. PSP games still look good, still play well, and making them redundant and non-transferable is a pretty shoddy way to treat gamers.

Hopefully Sony will have to rethink this, as they have the stupid pricing of memory cards for the Vita (via bundled offers) and play fair with western gamers. I don't want to buy all those games again on PSN (sorry SEN, a whole other problem for Sony) despite the decent offers, some of them you can't even get, so do the decent thing Sony and  sort it out.
