July Update: PlayStation 6 and PlayStation Portable future visions

The recent PlayStation video about the "simulated" technology in development, discussed between AMD and Sony engineers that will power the PlayStation 6 was interesting from a geek point of view. But from a gameplay perspective, there is - IMO - no need for a PlayStation 6 for another few years. Especially with the limp Xbox is-it-isn't-it launch .  July 2026 Update : Sony managed a cannon-fire sized self-inflicted injury by announcing the end of physical releases across the end of the PS5 era and the launch of the PS6. Due to lack of sales (only 7 titles have passed the 100,000 mark in the last year) and economics, it still doesn't matter to PlayStation owners, collectors are stores, who can now only sell digital codes in a box.  June 2026 Update : The latest snippet of gossip for Sony's next-gen systems is a modular/external drive that will connect to both devices. id's Doom comes storming to Evercade

There I was tidying up the Evercade release list, wondering when the 2026 news would start dripping out.

And then this little teaser gem from the Evercade team pops up, helping celebrate the 35th anniversary of ID Software, and its PC ground-shattering opus.

Questions abound:

  • I wonder what format we'll get (likely not Bill Rehbock and John Carmack's hand-coded Jaguar version)?
  • How many games from the series will the cart feature?
  • Whether it will include NIN's music?
  • Or be loaded with some of the best mods?

All we have is a 2026 release window (update: apparently October), but every platform deserves Doom and it should be an exploding barrel of fun, however you enjoy your Evercade, thanks to the legendary team's iconic efforts.

I remember the shareware version on my little old 386 DX-40MHz, then the Jag edition and many revisits since. At LAN parties, late nights in the office, or retro revisits, each a fun wade into the bloody world that remains a giant totem across all gaming. One more time can't hurt me plenty, right?

Currently playing on my Vita/PS3/PS4/PS5
