Vectrex Mini interview - David Oghia talks up the nostalgic vector powerhouse

Having been wowed by the news of the Vectrex Mini at Gamescom , I rushed off some questions to VectrexOn's main man  David Oghia . After a post-event, well earned, break, he's kindly given us a lot of detail about the project and some new images of the unit to share.  His story mirrors mine somewhat, Vectrex represents a glowing, unaffordable, obelisk of gaming power from our youth! But he's had the energy and drive to do something about it, and met the right people to get the job done!  What first got you interested in Vectrex and what spawned the idea of a Mini version? I’ve always been passionate about retro-gaming, but my first love was computers rather than consoles — the ZX81, then the Commodore 128. I only really discovered the console world in the late 90s, which is when I got my very first Vectrex. Of course, I had seen it in stores back in 1983, but at that time it was far too expensive for me.  Today, I own five Vectrex systems at home. Vector-based games ...

Roguecraft DX Hints and Tips

For such a compact little Evercade title, there's a lot to unpack in Badger Punch Games' Roguecraft DX. So, while playing amid mounting frustration, I tried to add some order to the mayhem with these hints and tips that I try to follow, until I forget and then die stupidly, again.

Note: If you have any clever tips or seen any mad secrets, do comment!

I usually play with the Warrior, the Rogue's teleport is a useful but slow-charging tool, and suggest you only try the Wizard once you've mastered the game with the other characters.

I've made it to the final boss. In short there are three distinct phases, levels 1-5: collect everything, levels 6-11: playing clever, and levels 12-15: survival mode.

Roguecraft DX

Exploring in Roguecraft DX

1. Don't fight everything straight away, especially in the early levels if you have low health. Run around and use natural obstacles to avoid combat. Come back and finish them off when you have better health or strength.

2. Stop and stare. In later levels, look for acid, flame and other traps before moving and plan your route. Check your health before wading into battle, and check it again after every higher-level encounter.

3. Before you exit. Think, did you leave a health heart somewhere? Have you found the secret on that level?

4. Secrets. Look for cracked bricks or slabs at the edge of levels that coincide with blank spaces on the map

5. Level 9+, Stop being bold and take a cautious approach to every room, use the turn-based nature of the game to you advantage, while finding the best route to the exit. Learn where helpful potions/hearts are without fighting unnecessary battles unless you are well-stocked. Even then, preserve what you can as Roguecraft only gets tougher in the next levels.

Fighting in Roguecraft DX

1. Kill everything, to maximise your chances of finding health and strength gems, just not necessarily right away. When on low-health concentrate on finding a heart or potion first, or strength to reduce the turns in combat.

2. Fight logically. In a room with multiple baddies, kill the weakest or closest first to avoid getting ganged-up on. Leave mimic chests until last. Also, watch for rare cases where a large monster obscures a small one!

3. Trap 'em first. If you have low health, move around in later levels to get nasties to impale or toast themselves.

4. Bigger battles. In the mid- and later-levels enemies deal multiple point hints, check your health every time and heal if necessary.

5.Boss fight. Keep killing the chickens, don’t get boxed in

Potions, Gems and Hearts in Roguecraft DX

1. Back-and-forth. Sometimes, you can leave a room and return to move the hearts and key around, hopefully nearer you or away from enemies if your health is low. This doesn't work for potions as far as I can tell.

2. Use Orange health expanding gems as you would health hearts, there's no need to grab it right away if healthy, just remember to pick it up before leaving the level.

3. Don't waste potions, find out what they do in a room where they could come in handy rather than burning them for no reason or just to make space.

4. Save strength potions for later battles if possible. Similarly, use health hearts on a level before a restoring green potion that you should save for later levels.

5. Divine Intervention. You should open all chests for the best score, and to hunt for a divine intervention (gold gem) acts as a rare extra life.

6. For the glory run. Clear the Room and Health gems are the best combo, or perhaps strength and teleport to help you through the later levels. But don't let a poor pre-set (drunk and map reveal) put you off.

7. Any potion will cure poison, so even the useless ones can be handy in the later levels.

Once more into battle! If you have more suggestions, please add them in the comments.
