Vectrex Mini interview - David Oghia talks up the nostalgic vector powerhouse

Having been wowed by the news of the Vectrex Mini at Gamescom , I rushed off some questions to VectrexOn's main man  David Oghia . After a post-event, well earned, break, he's kindly given us a lot of detail about the project and some new images of the unit to share.  His story mirrors mine somewhat, Vectrex represents a glowing, unaffordable, obelisk of gaming power from our youth! But he's had the energy and drive to do something about it, and met the right people to get the job done!  What first got you interested in Vectrex and what spawned the idea of a Mini version? I’ve always been passionate about retro-gaming, but my first love was computers rather than consoles — the ZX81, then the Commodore 128. I only really discovered the console world in the late 90s, which is when I got my very first Vectrex. Of course, I had seen it in stores back in 1983, but at that time it was far too expensive for me.  Today, I own five Vectrex systems at home. Vector-based games ...

Indie game news explosion kicks off with shopping and violence

Summer is over and developers are getting back into gear, with a host of indie news this week. I'll add the news to this roundup and hope that you're all paying attention to some of these and not the usual allegedly-AAA fodder.

First up is a hearty congratulations to PQube and Crinkle Cut Games for hitting 100,000 sales in a week for Discounty, the small-town retail management frenzy simulator. Riding high in the Switch charts, this all-format release can delight all gamers with a physical release on the way. (Switch price £16.99)

Set in the seaside town of Blomkest, Discounty has struck a chord with players across the globe thanks to its unique mix of chillstore management, small-town drama, and delightfully offbeat humour.

Discounty was developed by a small but incredibly talented team of just five people, who poured their creativity, passion, and countless hours into bringing the quirky world of Blomkest to life. What makes the story even more exciting is that this is only the beginning – the team is fully committed to building on the game’s early success, with a roadmap of ongoing updates, quality-of-life improvements, and brand-new features already in the works.

Slain 2 Reborn to Gib

Ramping up the action, metal-loving developer Andrew Gilmour has dropped a teaser for Slain 2: The Beast Within promising more over-the-top barbaric action following on from 2016's Slain, which looked great on the Vita OLED.

Coming soon from Silver Lining Interactive, it promises more death, rebirth, werewolves blood and gore, and an almighty soundtrack.

Are You Really Immortal?

Looking similarly energetic, Immortal from Mishura Games, a Kung-Fu Noir prison escape action title based on Buddhist myth, has a Kickstarter lined up for mid-September. Mixing combat, dating sim and exploration, rather than blurb on about the game, I draw your attention to the dev's heartfelt message below.

More indie news as it comes in, with Bit Kid's Wolfhound getting a reveal at the Indieexchange
Fall MIX Showcase on the PAXWest2025 livestream going live at 9AM PST (5PM UK).
