Chronicles of the Wolf howls its Metroidvania lament across consoles

There I was, arranging fans for maximum airflow and sheltering from the heat behind blinds and curtsains, getting ready for a quiet summer of no news. Then up pops a PQube press release to remind me its still Spring.

The news celebrates the launch of Metroidvania, Chronicles of the Wolf, from Migami Games and PixelHeart. A gothic night-clad adventure, it sees Mateo Lombardo on the hunt the legendary Beast of Gévaudan. He must uncover the tricks, traps, clues and dark secrets lurking across a classy 16-bit-style opern world, with chunky boss battles and lots of exploring.

Chronicles of the Wolf

Narrated by Robert Belgrade (Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Tekken, Soul Blade), with a stunning soundtrack composed by Jeffrey Montoya, and guest tracks by Óscar Araujo, both acclaimed for their work on Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, there's plenty of calibre behind the production.

While the inital graphics look a little sticky from the trailer, I'm pretty sure it'll play well on Switch or PS5, on stores now for £16.99/£15.99. With poweful bosses, great effects and animation there's tight combat against over 100 challenging enemies, gorgeous gothic environments with a dynamic day-night cycle that changes everything.

Sounds like a great way to spend some time while I wait for Timespinner 2 and the more-modern-themed Wolfhound to arrive!

Packed with secrets and a compelling story, there's even an appearance from Bloodless — the iconic crimson adversary from the Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night series — makes a special guest appearance, voiced by Kira Buckland (NieR: Automata, Genshin Impact).

Chronicles of the Wolf is out now on Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox, and Steam. With physical editions for Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5 available from retailers. The physical version is available for around £25

Currently playing on my Vita/PS3/PS4/PS5
