Vectrex Mini interview - David Oghia talks up the nostalgic vector powerhouse

Having been wowed by the news of the Vectrex Mini at Gamescom , I rushed off some questions to VectrexOn's main man  David Oghia . After a post-event, well earned, break, he's kindly given us a lot of detail about the project and some new images of the unit to share.  His story mirrors mine somewhat, Vectrex represents a glowing, unaffordable, obelisk of gaming power from our youth! But he's had the energy and drive to do something about it, and met the right people to get the job done!  What first got you interested in Vectrex and what spawned the idea of a Mini version? I’ve always been passionate about retro-gaming, but my first love was computers rather than consoles — the ZX81, then the Commodore 128. I only really discovered the console world in the late 90s, which is when I got my very first Vectrex. Of course, I had seen it in stores back in 1983, but at that time it was far too expensive for me.  Today, I own five Vectrex systems at home. Vector-based games ...

Steam Deck goes white for winter

Among the many handheld updates hitting the online stores this winter, one of the more aesthetic tweaks is a white Steam Deck OLED model. Shipping on the 18th of November, the 1TB model will retail for $679 to the usual regions, and - most importantly - come with a case and micro fibre cloth to keep that pristine plastic and paint free from scuffs and finger marks.

Otherwise, its business as usual with access to the massive PC library, and console games through various tweaks. With limited numbers available, if you have the funds or a rich uncle, it should make a good addition to your handheld collection, but multiple colour versions of the £180 PSP or 3DS is one thing, having a shelf full of £500+ mega-gadgets does feel excessive.

I love the grey PlayStation-like tone on the buttons, (spot the difference between this and the 30th Anniversary PlayStation Portal) and with competition from the likes of the Ayaneo 3 Evo and many others, hopefully handheld brands will be more innovate stylistically in 2025.

Check out the Steam Deck page when orders go live. To prevent scalping, accounts need to have made a previous order to qualify and it's one-per-customer.

The specs remain the same:

  • 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display with premium anti-glare etched glass
  • 7.4" Diagonal display size
  • 90Hz refresh rate
  • Wi-Fi 6E
  • 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
