File under it-was-inevitable, but a new update for the PlayStation Portal brings HD 60fps cloud streaming for select PS5 titles among other tweaks. Assuming this is a test for bandwidth and response times, and all goes well, then it shouldn't be too long before the entire PlayStation Plus catalogue is open to Portal users.
UPDATE: More games have been added to the Cloud for Portal and PS5 players to enjoy without downloading. Now approaching 1,000 games, the list will continue to grow over 2025, although it'd probably help if there was more clarity across the sites and stores.
With PlayStation's beta program now up and running, expect more experiments in ways to play!
With Xbox and Switch lollygagging over their future portable plans, Sony can run with all the features it can squeeze out of the limited spec of the Portal, which Sony has been happy to report as a modest success among the battery of PS5 peripherals, and hopefully get a move on with PSP2 ahead of the pack.
The beta provides over access to over 120 PS5 games from the PS Plus Game catalogue, including Ghost of Tsushima, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Monster Hunter Rise, Dave the Diver and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, with streaming performance up to 1080p/60fps depending on your connection and local setup.
The full info with regional restrictions and other technical information can be found here. The Portal has been freely available from the likes of Amazon since launch, with happy users reporting a positive experience, but now the system updates are freeing up the extra features, hopefully 2025 will really see it get into its stride.
