Vectrex Mini interview - David Oghia talks up the nostalgic vector powerhouse

Having been wowed by the news of the Vectrex Mini at Gamescom , I rushed off some questions to VectrexOn's main man  David Oghia . After a post-event, well earned, break, he's kindly given us a lot of detail about the project and some new images of the unit to share.  His story mirrors mine somewhat, Vectrex represents a glowing, unaffordable, obelisk of gaming power from our youth! But he's had the energy and drive to do something about it, and met the right people to get the job done!  What first got you interested in Vectrex and what spawned the idea of a Mini version? I’ve always been passionate about retro-gaming, but my first love was computers rather than consoles — the ZX81, then the Commodore 128. I only really discovered the console world in the late 90s, which is when I got my very first Vectrex. Of course, I had seen it in stores back in 1983, but at that time it was far too expensive for me.  Today, I own five Vectrex systems at home. Vector-based games ...

Data East and Toaplan bulk up Evercade's Arcade Roster

Clicking into Evercade cartridge slots at the end of November, a pair of Arcade releases have just been added to the release list's horizon. Having recently notched up a million sales, the Blaze brand will be looking to push on and attract more buyers - will these old stagers on the Evercade scene help that drive?

Data East has been represented with one of the original console releases and the first Arcade collections, Arcade collection 12 features Super BurgerTime and Peter Pepper's Ice Cream Factory, Express Raider and the famed Midnight Resistance, plus hoodlum shooter, Shoot Out.

Providing more shoot 'em up action are a bunch of less-well-known lights (to me), including SRD: Super Real Darwin, Last Mission and B-Wings, alongside beat 'em up games Crude Buster and Trio The Punch: Never Forget Me..., and big-hearted platformer Joe & Mac Returns!

Toaplan is on their third arcade collection, so we've already been treated to most of their big hitters. However, there's seven more on the way, lead by Batsugun (plus a Special Edition), Out Zone and Truxton II to Evercade systems. Get ready to play some amazing shmup games in Tate mode! Along for the ride are FixEight, Vimana, and puzzle action game Ghox.

Check out the videos if there are any titles you are unfamiliar with. And if you're thinking of jumping on the Evercade bus, check all the many hardware options that £50-£250 from dinky handhelds to the big-screen experience.

As a big Burger Time fan, I'm looking forward to the Super edition, with hopefully slightly more forgiving controls. And from Toaplan, the mix of shooter and block breaker game in Ghox looks like an interesting challenge.
