PlayStation 6 and PlayStation Portable future visions

The recent PlayStation video about the "simulated" technology in development between AMD and Sony engineers that will power the PlayStation 6 was interesting from a geek point of view. But from a gameplay perspective, there is - IMO - no need for a PlayStation 6 for another few years. Especially with the limp Xbox is-it-isn't-it launch .  April 2026 Update:  Compatibility with PS5 and PS4 games seems to be locked-in, as anything the PS6 full fat hardware the portable versions should be able to do as well, with near-invisible trade-offs at the silicon level.  Prices are firming up too with estimates around the PlayStation 6 handheld at between $500 to $700 and a PlayStation 6 at $700 to $1,000, depending on the deepening silicon crisis and Sony's budgeting wizards.  Only a few developers around the world could afford to take advantage of it for AAA+ budget games. Killzone Liberation liberated from PSP to PS4/5

Among the latest batch of titles announced for PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers, the only one from the PSP archive is a goodie. Guerrilla's Killzone Liberation mixes action and light tactics as a Templar rages around the battlefields of Vekta in the ongoing struggle against the Helghast.

I loved this back on the PSP, despite the rather murky/beige battlegrounds, with isometric tactical battles against ground troops, massive mechs and tanks. Killzone Liberation had great production values and was a break from the FPS origins of the series. Hopefully this version will include the DLC that was a late add with multiplayer and an extra set of missions.

Given that a search PSN for Killzone currently shows no results, it will be good to get a least one game back on the service. Hopefully it will feature upscaled visuals, trophies, and Killzone Liberation would make great use of the rewind feature given a player's ability to mess things up in the compact battlefields. It should also be better on a larger screen, considering how hard it could be to spot a key feature or gap in the landscape on the portable.

Note, Japanese RPG Coded Soul was briefly mentioned as another PSP game coming in June, but then dropped, definitely on the way are PS1 titles the classic Worms and Herc's Adventure.

This and last month's additions of Pursuit Force and Syphon Filter make for a good little groundswell of games gracing PS+ Premium, and with the new Project Q for Premium users only (apparently) they'll be back on the go sometime soon.

Currently playing on my Vita/PS3/PS4/PS5
