PlayStation 6 and PlayStation Portable future visions

The recent PlayStation video about the "simulated" technology in development, discussed between AMD and Sony engineers that will power the PlayStation 6 was interesting from a geek point of view. But from a gameplay perspective, there is - IMO - no need for a PlayStation 6 for another few years. Especially with the limp Xbox is-it-isn't-it launch .  April 2026 Update:  Compatibility with PS5 and PS4 games seems to be locked-in, as anything the PS6 full fat hardware the portable versions should be able to do as well, with near-invisible trade-offs at the silicon level.  Prices are firming up too with estimates around the PlayStation 6 handheld at between $500 to $700 and a PlayStation 6 at $700 to $1,000, depending on the deepening silicon crisis and Sony's budgeting wizards.  Only a few developers around the world could afford to take advantage of it for AAA+ budget games. Everyone else is still barely cutting the skin of the PS5's power, and most western smal...

First Evercade 2023 carts announced, C64 and Toaplan 2

My first evening out of the year and Evercade decides to drop two new launches. So, I'm scrambling to catch up.

The C64 Collection 2 and Toaplan Arcade 2 will arrive at the end of April, with pre-orders going live on February 17th 2023, those pesky supply chain gremlins hopefully having cleared now. And, while I don't expect the folk at Blaze to up the pace much, hopefully this is the start of a very steady release cadence for the year (updated release list).

Having already posted what I would love to see on any Toaplan 2 collection, it is great to see Fire Shark and Twin Cobra in the mix, along with:

  • Demon's World
  • Hellfire
  • Rally Bike
  • Twin Hawk
  • Wardner

That's a whole lot of Tate Mode shmup goodness, and a few curios to even things out, with room left over for a Toaplan Collection 3, hopefully.

On the C64 side, the first c64 cart still gets plenty of play and C64 Collection 2 will hit harder with timeless classics Uridium, Cybernoid and Nebulus among the 14 games. The full list is:

  • California Games
  • Cybernoid
  • Firelord
  • Impossible Mission II
  • Insects in Space
  • Mission Impossibubble
  • Nebulus
  • Pitstop II
  • Slayer
  • Street Sports Basketball
  • Sword of Fargoal
  • Uridium
  • World Games
  • Zamzara

If you're not into Evercade yet, the handheld and mini consoles are great low-cost ways to get into legit retro gaming. With the joy of proper boxed copies with all sorts of goodies and manuals in the case.

Currently playing on my Vita/PS3/PS4/PS5
