PlayStation 6 and PlayStation Portable future visions

The recent PlayStation video about the "simulated" technology in development between AMD and Sony engineers that will power the PlayStation 6 was interesting from a geek point of view. But from a gameplay perspective, there is - IMO - no need for a PlayStation 6 for another few years. Especially with the limp Xbox is-it-isn't-it launch .  April 2026 Update:  Compatibility with PS5 and PS4 games seems to be locked-in, as anything the PS6 full fat hardware the portable versions should be able to do as well, with near-invisible trade-offs at the silicon level.  Prices are firming up too with estimates around the PlayStation 6 handheld at between $500 to $700 and a PlayStation 6 at $700 to $1,000, depending on the deepening silicon crisis and Sony's budgeting wizards.  Only a few developers around the world could afford to take advantage of it for AAA+ budget games. Everyone else is still barely cutting the skin of the PS5's power, and most western smaller/indie o...

Evercade imports the Renovation Collection, coming 2022

Evercade teased a fresh announcement yesterday, their first for 2022, and now the details are out. Welcome the “Renovation Collection 1” (cart 23) featuring twelve console games from Telenet (Japan) and Renovation (US) that never got to see the light of day in Europe from the 16-bit era, mostly Mega Drive and PC Engine releases.

Update: The Renovation cart launches on March 31st 2022, with pre-orders going live on December 15th.

Titles are, naturally, all a bit of a mystery to me (as a Brit) and include:

  • Arcus Odyssey (action, fantasy)
  • Beast Wrestler (fighting, fantasy)
  • Dino Land (pinball)
  • El Viento (platformer)
  • Exile (role playing)
  • Final Zone (mech shooter)
  • Gaiares (shmup)
  • Granada (shmup)
  • Sol-Deace (shmup)
  • Traysia (role playing)
  • Valis: The Fantasm Soldier (platfomer)
  • Valis 3 (platformer)
UPDATE: The official trailer is live below, but put a video list of these games in action to help educate those of us (like me) who were largely unaware of these titles (thought some of them might be on the PC Engine/Core Grafx mini systems, but apparently not).

This collection brings something to the Evercade physical cartridge system that the community and users have been asking for. Rare titles, interesting imports, and a wider mix of great Japanese-developed video games. The inclusion of JRPGs and Shoot ‘em ups will be of great interest to Evercade fans and to collectors who wish to get their hands on fully licensed versions of these games.
