June Update: PlayStation 6 and PlayStation Portable future visions

The recent PlayStation video about the "simulated" technology in development, discussed between AMD and Sony engineers that will power the PlayStation 6 was interesting from a geek point of view. But from a gameplay perspective, there is - IMO - no need for a PlayStation 6 for another few years. Especially with the limp Xbox is-it-isn't-it launch .  June 2026 Update : The latest snippet of gossip for Sony's next-gen systems is a modular/external drive that will connect to both devices. Allowing installation on the portable of physical games, and reducing the cost of the PS6 by making the Blu-ray an accessory (like the PS5 Slim).  I prefer the idea of a dedicated dock on the PS6 that connects the next Portable to your entire PSN library, and they'd better make it work as an extra controller, but I'm sure there are practical benefits to the extra drive.   That should also boost sales of PS4 and PS5 physical games, especially on the second-hand market, as folk...

NEW: This week's Vita lockdown screenshot challenge: WipEout 2048

Since we're light on new games news due to Covid slowing down Sony approvals, here's a diversion for VitaIsland (inspired by the community on Twitter). Let's have a few photo mode or screenshot contests of the best-looking games and scenes to show off just how good the handheld is.

This week, play a few levels of WipEout 2048 (the demo is still live if you don't own it) and muck around with the photo mode function. Zoom in, zoom out, get all the ships in frenzied action or focus on the fine detail of one vessel, or a cool bit of the scenery that usually whizzes by so fast, most of us don't notice.

Post them on Twitter using #PSVitaShare, #wipeout #vitaisland and we can bask in the visual power of the near-decade old Vita. Below are my efforts, some people are already posting... so have a peek and comment.

The game is only £12.99 on PSN, or you can pick it up cheap second-hand if you want the physical copy, with the Fury and HD expansions both available. Note, multiplayer services were closed last year, so no Platinum if you're late to the WipEout party! Or you can pick it up on Amazon relatively cheaply.

And here are some of the stunning early submissions for history's sake... will add more as they come in.
