PlayStation 6 and PlayStation Portable future visions

The recent PlayStation video about the "simulated" technology in development between AMD and Sony engineers that will power the PlayStation 6 was interesting from a geek point of view. But from a gameplay perspective, there is - IMO - no need for a PlayStation 6 for another few years. Especially with the limp Xbox is-it-isn't-it launch .  April 2026 Update:  Compatibility with PS5 and PS4 games seems to be locked-in, as anything the PS6 full fat hardware the portable versions should be able to do as well, with near-invisible trade-offs at the silicon level.  Prices are firming up too with estimates around the PlayStation 6 handheld at between $500 to $700 and a PlayStation 6 at $700 to $1,000, depending on the deepening silicon crisis and Sony's budgeting wizards.  Only a few developers around the world could afford to take advantage of it for AAA+ budget games. Naughty Dog makes the Vita a meme in TLoU2

The Last of Us 2, in looking to regain some kudos after the dumb leaks a few weeks back. Naught Dog had a gameplay reveal last night where the super star was in fact a humble PS Vita. Ignore the fact it was in the hands of villain, the impact made the Vita a trending term of Twitter. Even more so than lesbian kisses and Ellie's murder streak, including a dog.

The reactions went the whole spectrum from "Vita 2 confirmed" to "last surviving Vita owner killed!" and many more, most in the theme of "Sony finally kills the Vita". With a hat tip to Hotline Miami, the game being played on the Vita, or at least we can hear its soundtrack, it was fun, it was clever of Naughty Dog to add it in, and I suppose it can be taken as Sony's final ever mention of the handheld in a rather fitting context.

The only question is, aside from the smirks raised during Persona 5, how many other developers will think to add a Vita as an easter egg or nodding wink to the portable, and help keep its memory alive in years to come?

Guess I'll have to take a stab at finishing off the first game on the old PS3 (update: hang on, forgot I have the PS4 remaster) before picking up the latest effort.

Currently playing on my Vita/PS3/PS4/PS5
