July Update: PlayStation 6 and PlayStation Portable future visions

The recent PlayStation video about the "simulated" technology in development, discussed between AMD and Sony engineers that will power the PlayStation 6 was interesting from a geek point of view. But from a gameplay perspective, there is - IMO - no need for a PlayStation 6 for another few years. Especially with the limp Xbox is-it-isn't-it launch .  July 2026 Update : Sony managed a cannon-fire sized self-inflicted injury by announcing the end of physical releases across the end of the PS5 era and the launch of the PS6. Due to lack of sales (only 7 titles have passed the 100,000 mark in the last year) and economics, it still doesn't matter to PlayStation owners, collectors are stores, who can now only sell digital codes in a box.  June 2026 Update : The latest snippet of gossip for Sony's next-gen systems is a modular/external drive that will connect to both devices. Sony can't even mention the Vita by name in new advert

Sony's latest advert for Remote Play shows off the Vita, but since Sony doesn't make or sell them anymore, there's little point in name-checking it as that would "confuse" consumers - in the beady eyes of their marketing team. This is likely a response to the arrival of Google Stadia, the over-priced streaming only service that will die horribly pretty quickly, I reckon.

To be fair, the Remote Play experience with a DualShock and iPhone is pretty much the bees knees, since the iOS 13 update (if you get some gonky connector). But there's still nothing quite like playing on the Vita.

Of course, this wouldn't be a problem if the HD update Vita 2 (or whatever) had been rolled out to challenge the Switch. There has been some recent media fuss (all based on one patent for some shitty memory card or storage - Sony stop it, proprietary storage is dead!) which addled minds have linked to a new portable. But I'll believe and write about that when there's something more concrete.

Currently playing on my Vita/PS3/PS4/PS5
