Vectrex Mini interview - David Oghia talks up the nostalgic vector powerhouse

Having been wowed by the news of the Vectrex Mini at Gamescom , I rushed off some questions to VectrexOn's main man  David Oghia . After a post-event, well earned, break, he's kindly given us a lot of detail about the project and some new images of the unit to share.  His story mirrors mine somewhat, Vectrex represents a glowing, unaffordable, obelisk of gaming power from our youth! But he's had the energy and drive to do something about it, and met the right people to get the job done!  What first got you interested in Vectrex and what spawned the idea of a Mini version? I’ve always been passionate about retro-gaming, but my first love was computers rather than consoles — the ZX81, then the Commodore 128. I only really discovered the console world in the late 90s, which is when I got my very first Vectrex. Of course, I had seen it in stores back in 1983, but at that time it was far too expensive for me.  Today, I own five Vectrex systems at home. Vector-based games ...

Wonder Boy: Monster Land rides to Switch

SEGA AGES next entry in the journey through the publisher's legacy collection is the joyous Wonder Boy: Monster Land. It might have new modes, leaderboards and other fluff, but I just love the simple jumping, dodging, fighting fun of a pure arcade classic. If you enjoyed the modern Wonder Boy, do save some credits for the inspiration! As with Virtua Racing, it arrives at the end of June for around $7.99

It  contains several notable improvements such as a "Power Up New Game" (New Game Plus) feature that can be enabled at any time, even if you haven't beaten the game, allowing you to restart after a Game Over with the same gear.

There are also 3 new challenge modes (Sphinx and Monster Castle time attacks plus the Fire Ball score attack), online leaderboards, a Replay function, and a "Money Hungry Mode." This last item plays off a bug that existed in the arcade original where players would increase the value of any hidden gold by quickly shaking the joystick back and forth. While the unintended bug is enabled by default here, the "Money Hungry Mode" disables it for the truly hardcore!
