PSP2, Switch 2 and an Xbox handheld... a brighter portable future?

Shields up, here comes Nokia

For all Sony's Vita woes, there must still be some value in portable because hardware companies are still producing games-focused devices. Next up is the Nvidia Shield, a Tegra-4 powered Android device with HD-out plus a 5-inch, multitouch 720p pop-up screen. The Tegra 4 offers four CPU cores and 72 graphics cores to play at 3200x2000 res, so games can be played at higher HD resolution on your TV.

The hardware will be upgraded annually, so new Shields will always be able to play the latest games, unlike Vita which already sees developers making compromises to get dedicated games to play smoothly.

As well as a decent list of Shield-optimized Android games (so I guess it won't play the full array of mobile games via the controller), the Shield can play your PC titles if you have a suitable NV graphics card and will retail at $349 around $100 more than the basic Vita (according to Amazon) and will be out in June. Optimized games include Dead Trigger, Max Payne, GTA III, ShadowRun, Sonic and more.
