Vectrex Mini interview - David Oghia talks up the nostalgic vector powerhouse

Having been wowed by the news of the Vectrex Mini at Gamescom , I rushed off some questions to VectrexOn's main man  David Oghia . After a post-event, well earned, break, he's kindly given us a lot of detail about the project and some new images of the unit to share.  His story mirrors mine somewhat, Vectrex represents a glowing, unaffordable, obelisk of gaming power from our youth! But he's had the energy and drive to do something about it, and met the right people to get the job done!  What first got you interested in Vectrex and what spawned the idea of a Mini version? I’ve always been passionate about retro-gaming, but my first love was computers rather than consoles — the ZX81, then the Commodore 128. I only really discovered the console world in the late 90s, which is when I got my very first Vectrex. PS Vita games by screen resolution

Original: Having got back into playing Virtua Tennis on the Vita, I realised how stunning the game looked and was wondering what else among my (or your) collection shows the Vita off at its best (ignoring aliasing, other effects and so on).

After some digging, I've come up with many titles' screen resolution, with native-res being 960 by 544. If you see a title missing and know the res, please comment!

Note, some games run with screen elements in various resolutions (Persona 4 Golden, for example), or they dynamically adjust resolution to keep up the speed (WipEout 2048). Some use anti-aliasing to various degrees to clear up jagged lines. Games running at lower-resolutions have more GPU power to add extra filters and effects, so just because a game is low-res doesn't mean it will look bad (except F1 2011, which looked mud-coated horrible from every angle).

FINAL UPDATE: Since major developers have stopped producing Vita games, seems rather pointless updating the list further, but if you want to know the res of a game, comment and I'll try and find it.

  4. God of War Collection is another one to add to the 720x408p pile of games... Was expecting Native... And higher than 18-30fps...

  5. Hello! I just wanted to let you know that Ys Memories of Celcata does not render it's native res. It's actually quite ugly. The interface, dialogue portraits, and menus are native res, but where it counts, the gameplay, is clearly upscaled from a lower resolution.

  8. The game Child of Light runs at PS Vita's native resolution (960x544). Also, the game Malicious Rebirth runs at PS Vita's native resolution (960x544) .

  18. That 720x408 list...like I can totally see Uncharted and Assassin's Creed being that resolution considering how fuzzy they are, but Dead or Alive 5+? Probably need to get my eyes checked again, because that game looked pretty sharp to me.
    ....maybe there's a little fuzz there. Nowhere near as bad as those two games I listed though.

  22. What were they smoking to put 4X AA at the lowest resolution? It literally would have required less resources just to put at native with simple FXAA or non at all.

    1. On Vita, the resolution is more demanding than AA.
      Criterion said it to Eurogamers when they released NFS

    2. Yup, it's do with powerVR chipset doing 4MSAA very cheap. But I think it depends on the renderer forward/deferred etc. So that's why you don't see it in every Vita game.
