Lumines Arises from PlayStation's State of Play

Yeah, there were lots of big games at State of Play, but the opener was the highlight for me. A monster puzzle hit on the PSP and Vita (and a PS4 remaster), Lumines was and remains a game to play forever, headphones jacked in for the phenomenal soundtracks.

The originals were developed by Tetsuya Mizuguchi while at Q Entertainment. He's now at Enhance Experience, and is responsible for the latest iteration.

The series is back for the PS5-era with Arise, a new take on the classic format with some very busy 4K front-and-back-of-screen themes action going on in the trailer. A new feature is the Burst mode that locks a useful block in place for players to rack up big bonuses.

The screen will also zoom in and out to key areas, adding to the trance mayhem.

But Arise will be nothing without great music, and the early indications are strong with the ambient shufflings of Hydelic (of Tetris Effect fame) and Krysta Youngs's "Only Human," Hopefully there's budget for some of the massive artists that graced earlier versions.

Check out the blog post for some more detail on the gameplay mechanics. Lumines Arise lands in the Autumn, playable on PSVR for total immersion, but I reckon PlayStation Portal is where the game will find its natural state, tucked up in bed with nothing in the universe but those pulsing cubes!

Currently playing on my Vita/PS3/PS4/PS5
