Vectrex Mini interview - David Oghia talks up the nostalgic vector powerhouse

Having been wowed by the news of the Vectrex Mini at Gamescom , I rushed off some questions to VectrexOn's main man  David Oghia . After a post-event, well earned, break, he's kindly given us a lot of detail about the project and some new images of the unit to share.  His story mirrors mine somewhat, Vectrex represents a glowing, unaffordable, obelisk of gaming power from our youth! But he's had the energy and drive to do something about it, and met the right people to get the job done!  What first got you interested in Vectrex and what spawned the idea of a Mini version? I’ve always been passionate about retro-gaming, but my first love was computers rather than consoles — the ZX81, then the Commodore 128. I only really discovered the console world in the late 90s, which is when I got my very first Vectrex. Of course, I had seen it in stores back in 1983, but at that time it was far too expensive for me.  Today, I own five Vectrex systems at home. Vector-based games ...

Nintendo officially reveals Switch 2

We all knew what was coming, thanks to the many leaks over the last few months. But here's the Switch 2 reveal video anyway! While pretty and cartoony, it shows little useful other than a new (or updated) Mario with potentially more players, confirmation of the JoyCon-as-mouse control feature, and the date for the next Nintendo Direct, on 2nd April.

Update: various gossip suggests a $399-499 price point and a decent roster of games Plenty of indies are keen, with Fur Squadron Phoenix already confirmed as a third-party release, and Kaku Ancient Seal looks good, alongside the inevitable monster Nintendo roster.

What would make a difference is if Nintendo brings back the seal of quality to stop the AI-shit-tsunami that infects the Switch store. Even if its an AI bot tossing out all the other AI crap, I'd take that!

Available later this year, Switch 2 should be a monster seller, as most of us 150 million Switch owners upgrade, disgruntled Xbox owners fall off that wagon, and some PlayStation people get bored of the slow, drip-drip release of a few big games and go multiplatform in the gap to PS6.

Alongside that shift, we can ignore the many petulant Switch 2 vs PC handheld and PlayStation arguments, Nintendo will rely on its games, and having recently restarted Mario Odyssey, Zelda BotW and played some more Mario Kart, each title remains a class above.

What flavour do you want your Switch 2 in?

I do wonder if there will be OLED and LCD versions on release, to give buyers the choice. In the mid-20s, OLED isn't that special now, and I can't see Nintendo out-pricing their market with any of the more advanced variants like Mini-LED. Then again, some laptop models, the iPad Pro and some smartphones use Mini-LED screens for up to 30% better brightness.

Further down the line there's the case for a Switch 2 Lite, which Nintendo will predictably release, perhaps with a 6-inch or 7-inch screen (like the Switch OLED)?

This story ends, Nintendo's story continues for many years to come.
