Vectrex Mini interview - David Oghia talks up the nostalgic vector powerhouse

Having been wowed by the news of the Vectrex Mini at Gamescom , I rushed off some questions to VectrexOn's main man  David Oghia . After a post-event, well earned, break, he's kindly given us a lot of detail about the project and some new images of the unit to share.  His story mirrors mine somewhat, Vectrex represents a glowing, unaffordable, obelisk of gaming power from our youth! But he's had the energy and drive to do something about it, and met the right people to get the job done!  What first got you interested in Vectrex and what spawned the idea of a Mini version? I’ve always been passionate about retro-gaming, but my first love was computers rather than consoles — the ZX81, then the Commodore 128. I only really discovered the console world in the late 90s, which is when I got my very first Vectrex. Of course, I had seen it in stores back in 1983, but at that time it was far too expensive for me.  Today, I own five Vectrex systems at home. Vector-based games ...

A 2024 Vita physical re-release, 1001 Spikes makes a prickly return

It is the year 2024, and the Vita is still getting physical releases, kinda! The only original copy of 1001 Spikes I see on eBay is listed for an insane £1,800 ($2,400) by an extreme optimist.

If you're a Vita collector and really fast on your fingers, you might just be able to grab a copy for a more reasonable fee of the revamped physical release. It comes as part of Nicalis' effort to celebrate the game's 10 anniversary, with an exciting-looking book-style bundle.

1001 spikes

Reasonably well received on its original release, 1001 Spikes was developed by 8Bits Fanatics and looks very retro, but packs in the challenge. Head over the pre-order page for when the bundles (PS4 or Vita) go live, with no idea of a production run. Bundle features include:

  • Authentic Key of Ukampa keychain in branded gift box with foam insert
  • Keychain unscrews to reveal a secret compartment, just like in the game
  • Exclusive Remix Soundtrack (2 audio CDs)
  • Retro two-color reversible English/Japanese instruction manual
  • Reversible cover sheet insert with retro box art
  • Keepsake outer box with debossed faux leather cover and magnetic closure

Given Nicalis' spiky reputation for Vita physicals, with VVVVV an even rarer proposition, keep your eyes open for more news as the Vita continues to remain the underground gaming platform of choice for many.
