Vectrex Mini interview - David Oghia talks up the nostalgic vector powerhouse

Having been wowed by the news of the Vectrex Mini at Gamescom , I rushed off some questions to VectrexOn's main man  David Oghia . After a post-event, well earned, break, he's kindly given us a lot of detail about the project and some new images of the unit to share.  His story mirrors mine somewhat, Vectrex represents a glowing, unaffordable, obelisk of gaming power from our youth! But he's had the energy and drive to do something about it, and met the right people to get the job done!  What first got you interested in Vectrex and what spawned the idea of a Mini version? I’ve always been passionate about retro-gaming, but my first love was computers rather than consoles — the ZX81, then the Commodore 128. I only really discovered the console world in the late 90s, which is when I got my very first Vectrex. Of course, I had seen it in stores back in 1983, but at that time it was far too expensive for me.  Today, I own five Vectrex systems at home. Vector-based games ...

Yars Rising mixes the first-gen classic with modern gaming

We've seen retro-modern games in many forms, from Space Invaders (Extreme), Arkanoid pumping up the Breakout vibe and Jeff Minter driving Tempest (TxK) into the trippy rave era. Yars Rising pulls the same trick with Atari Classic Yar's Revenge.

Developed by WayForward and published by Atari, it is a different vibe to the recent rush of reimagined Atari releases, taking the basic premise of the original and running (flying and jumping) with it in a whole new direction.

Yars Rising

Yar's got a fresh lease of life through Evercade's varous Atari releases, and the Atari 50 collection. The big mystery is what happened to the apostrophe over the decades? Or maybe not.

In Yars Rising, there's a Tron-style plot, loaded with Metroidvania action and a modern heroine on a mission to hack a dodgy tech corporation, QoTech. Across their HQ, she can explore and upgrade her skills to access new areas, and fight off the robots and alien creatures with increasingly powerful cannon, missiles and drones to help her out of tight spots.

Yars Rising looks a lot of fun, with a bright cartoony style. Looking forward to trying it out and seeing it in action in the upcoming Indie Game digital showcase from IGN.
