Vectrex Mini interview - David Oghia talks up the nostalgic vector powerhouse

Having been wowed by the news of the Vectrex Mini at Gamescom , I rushed off some questions to VectrexOn's main man  David Oghia . After a post-event, well earned, break, he's kindly given us a lot of detail about the project and some new images of the unit to share.  His story mirrors mine somewhat, Vectrex represents a glowing, unaffordable, obelisk of gaming power from our youth! But he's had the energy and drive to do something about it, and met the right people to get the job done!  What first got you interested in Vectrex and what spawned the idea of a Mini version? I’ve always been passionate about retro-gaming, but my first love was computers rather than consoles — the ZX81, then the Commodore 128. I only really discovered the console world in the late 90s, which is when I got my very first Vectrex. Of course, I had seen it in stores back in 1983, but at that time it was far too expensive for me.  Today, I own five Vectrex systems at home. Vector-based games ...

Anbernic RG40XX H retro handheld is $64 on launch

I'm finally on the lookout for a replacement for my Miyoo Mini Plus and something in the new RG40XX is tempting me. If you're looking for a budget big-screen retro model, I think this could be a winner.

There are so many flooding handhelds the market, but one that seems to have grabbed some attention is the new Anbernic RG40XX with its 640x480 4-inch 4x3-aspect IPS screen for good-looking retro gaming. (Or it could be the usual release flurry that will be over in hours, but I'm riding this one!)

For playing 8-bit and 16-bit titles it looks like a great fit, with good performance for original PlayStation titles. After that, N64, Dreamcast and PSP title performance can vary - check out Retro Game Corps first check video for more detail, and some of the controversies around Abernic's practices.

With 64-bit Linux power, plus the usual emulators and many 1,000s of dodgy ROMs, it looks like a reasonable product off the Anbernic production line, and has standard build quality, based on early tests. There's WiFi and HD-out to play on a big screen, and USB-C for charging.

Ambernic

For very early adopters, there's a bit of a discount on AliExpress, just as well as the model isn't even up on the official Anbernic site - yet. (All of that will likely change by Friday). Of course, there will be another Anbernic or two on the way next month, and rival Ayaneo models tend to be focusing more on the higher-end (more on them soon), so there will always be plenty of choice if you're not totally sold on the Anbernic RG40XX H retro handheld, but for now it looks like a lot of fun at an affordable price.
