Vectrex Mini interview - David Oghia talks up the nostalgic vector powerhouse

Having been wowed by the news of the Vectrex Mini at Gamescom , I rushed off some questions to VectrexOn's main man  David Oghia . After a post-event, well earned, break, he's kindly given us a lot of detail about the project and some new images of the unit to share.  His story mirrors mine somewhat, Vectrex represents a glowing, unaffordable, obelisk of gaming power from our youth! But he's had the energy and drive to do something about it, and met the right people to get the job done!  What first got you interested in Vectrex and what spawned the idea of a Mini version? I’ve always been passionate about retro-gaming, but my first love was computers rather than consoles — the ZX81, then the Commodore 128. I only really discovered the console world in the late 90s, which is when I got my very first Vectrex. Of course, I had seen it in stores back in 1983, but at that time it was far too expensive for me.  Today, I own five Vectrex systems at home. Vector-based games ...

Switch OLED Zelda model (with no game) hits in April

Portable hardware used to release in a rainbow of colours and models, with regular refreshes for collectors. But the expense of the Switch has limited Nintendo's ability to have much designer fun, except for some punky extra Joy-Cons and third-party branded standard controllers.

Fortunately, when it comes to big name releases, Nintendo is still ready to roll out the artwork, unlike Sony who's western LE Vitas were restricted to the packaging. A new OLED Switch variant, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Edition, lands in April, with a detailed Hylian Crest emblazoned on the dock.

See some of the detail on the Joy-Cons and casing toward the end of this new trailer, about 13 minutes in. There's also a pro-controller and a neat case to protect the Switch itself. Pricing is around $325/£320 with pre-orders live now from the usual outlets. A shame it doesn't come with the actual Tears of the Kingdom game!

Given the ongoing success of the Switch, here's hoping for a few more LEs over the second half of the system's life - with still no word on a second generation model. Surely someone at Nintendo is toying with the ARM Cortex-v8A or v9A models and the new Immortalis-G715 GPU, all begging to be slung in a slightly beefier case for cooling and the latest 5G/WiFi stack.
