June Update: PlayStation 6 and PlayStation Portable future visions

The recent PlayStation video about the "simulated" technology in development, discussed between AMD and Sony engineers that will power the PlayStation 6 was interesting from a geek point of view. But from a gameplay perspective, there is - IMO - no need for a PlayStation 6 for another few years. Especially with the limp Xbox is-it-isn't-it launch .  June 2026 Update : The latest snippet of gossip for Sony's next-gen systems is a modular/external drive that will connect to both devices. Allowing installation on the portable of physical games, and reducing the cost of the PS6 by making the Blu-ray an accessory (like the PS5 Slim).  I prefer the idea of a dedicated dock on the PS6 that connects the next Portable to your entire PSN library, and they'd better make it work as an extra controller, but I'm sure there are practical benefits to the extra drive.   That should also boost sales of PS4 and PS5 physical games, especially on the second-hand market, as folk...

Blaze upgrades its handheld to the Evercade EXP

The original Evercade handheld is starting to show its age recently, with some noticeable crawl in a few of the arcade titles. To keep pace with the big-screen Evercade VS and its beefier processor, and the more recent titles they're putting in collections, Blaze is retiring the original show pony and replacing it with a sleeker, more powerful, quad-trigger EXP model.

The while general model goes up for pre-order in September, arriving Winter for £129 with the Irem Arcade 1 collection. It has a more mature design and look compared to the original model, presumably that was a little too toy-like for some. Features include:

  • A 4.3” high resolution 800×480 IPS screen with glass cover
  • Improved 1.5GHz processor and 4GB RAM
  • USB- C charging
  • 720p Mini HDMI Output
  • Tate-mode for vertical games
  • WiFi for updates and more secret features

Or, there's a limited edition black model that can be pre-ordered from tomorrow with both new arcade carts (Irem and Taoplan) for £179. The only sad thing about either is that there are no retro-accent colours to make it look like an evercade, while pretty the EXP looks very much like all the knock off retro consoles coming out of China.

Still, the improvements are most welcome, and Evercade's budget focus (considering the whole global economic and supply chain turmoil thing) should make this a great Christmas gift bringing more retro joy to all.
