Vectrex Mini interview - David Oghia talks up the nostalgic vector powerhouse

Having been wowed by the news of the Vectrex Mini at Gamescom , I rushed off some questions to VectrexOn's main man  David Oghia . After a post-event, well earned, break, he's kindly given us a lot of detail about the project and some new images of the unit to share.  His story mirrors mine somewhat, Vectrex represents a glowing, unaffordable, obelisk of gaming power from our youth! But he's had the energy and drive to do something about it, and met the right people to get the job done!  What first got you interested in Vectrex and what spawned the idea of a Mini version? I’ve always been passionate about retro-gaming, but my first love was computers rather than consoles — the ZX81, then the Commodore 128. I only really discovered the console world in the late 90s, which is when I got my very first Vectrex. Of course, I had seen it in stores back in 1983, but at that time it was far too expensive for me.  Today, I own five Vectrex systems at home. Vector-based games ...

Word is PSP and Vita PSN stores are closing in summer

According to those pesky sources, the digital lifeblood that is the Vita store is not long for this world. The "confirmed" reports say (to be fair, not exactly a major site) that the PSP store will shut at the start of July, while the much-younger PS Vita store will close at the end of August.

I'm not sure about the sanity of that, or the tiny costs that Sony incurs to keep them running (and the PS3 store which is also going bye-bye!), it is really worth creating all that angst? Imagine the angry response to a gross act of digital vandalism from developers and publishers. Also, dev kits are still being sent around among those dedicated enough to bring games our way, so would it really make sense to kill PSN?

If true, that pretty much will mean the end of the Vita as Sony is due to shut down physical card production this year. And it is unlikely to official sanction homebrew, the only place to get the raft of new ports, indies and emulated Android games that are giving the handheld a fresh lease of life.

More annoying, I have 15 years worth of games dating back to those great PSone digital releases that I can't all store on cards. So, there had better be some mechanism to redownload or store them on a PC.

Whatever happens, I'll be here to the end, and beyond! In practical terms, time to jalbreak those PSPs and Vitas, get very large storage cards and download what you can.
