July Update: PlayStation 6 and PlayStation Portable future visions

 The recent PlayStation video about the "simulated" technology in development, discussed between AMD and Sony engineers that will power the PlayStation 6 was interesting from a geek point of view. But from a gameplay perspective, there is - IMO - no need for a PlayStation 6 for another few years. Especially with the limp Xbox is-it-isn't-it launch .  July 2026 Update : Sony managed a cannon-fire sized self-inflicted injury by announcing the end of physical releases across the end of the PS5 era and the launch of the PS6. Sony Vita To Launch In Europe in 2012?

UK mag CVG, so blame that messenger, has a retail source saying that Sony Vita will launch in January or February in 2012. Even worse for PSV is that news that the PS3 will be getting a sub-£200 price making it cheaper (heck, I'll get one just for a Blu-ray player).

Fair enough, it was always going to be tough for Sony to hit this year, given the earthquake and massive demands from tablets and phones for RAM and chips, but missing Christmas and making PS3 cheaper could throw several barriers in the way of the PSV's success. Amazon US is still showing a 31 December release date, perhaps Japan will be the only ones (not) celebrating Christmas with a shiny new toy.
